There’s Never Just a Right or Wrong

Dualism is the idea that an individual has two choices in the world. This can be seen in many decisions in life as well as in products individuals can purchase: Verizon vs. AT&T, Coke vs. Pepsi, and Caribou vs. Starbucks are just three examples. The Hegelian Dialectic correlates quite closely to this notion, and its implications are discussed further in a webpage called The Hegelian Dialectic and its use in Controlling Modern Society. This argumentative form was created by Georg Willhelm Friedrich Hegel, a philosopher of the 19th century. It focuses on how human beings cannot comprehend information unless they have two choices to differentiate from, such as good vs. evil and right vs. wrong, and this is a problem.

This webpage also discusses how the dialectic correlates to the sense that when there is a problem, there is a solution. This fails to leave much room for controversy or questioning, which is essential. It also fails to take into account that individuals are far more complex that right vs. wrong. All problems have multiple perspectives, and all solutions carry implications. It is not a decision between right and wrong because of all of the variables present. These concepts are far too one-sided to be effective. It is likely to mislead individuals down the wrong path and patterns of thinking.

Individuals need to work toward eliminating this idea of double-mindedness, which creates a schism in their minds, a schism being a split between two ideas.

schism

There typically never will be an even split between two choices. An example of this can be seen in the choice between theological beliefs and the scientific method. This does not need to be a choice between “right” and “wrong.” Who is to say the answer cannot be a mixture of both? Human beings are set apart from other species because of their complex ability to think critically, process information, and express intense emotion. As individuals who have this unique and special capacity, they must not fail to utilize it in their daily lives. They must realize and take into account all of the variables and perspectives that correlate with any issues that may arise. Ultimately, and despite what some may believe, the world does not revolve around one simple perspective. Therefore, it is the duty of humankind to choose not to push other ideas and perspectives off to the side and face the issues head on.
